Omaha Yoga Notes
(July/August 2008)

With Theresa Murphy

It’s refreshing to see the surge in attention to our mother, the earth. “Green” cars, “green” computers, clothes, gizmos, gadgets and “green” gear abound. Granted, some of this is simple marketing tactics to play on the emotions and pocketbooks of earth-conscious consumers. But, along side this upswing in “greening” is renewed participation in greater numbers in grassroots efforts such as clothing swaps, CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture), recycling, gas conservation and back yard gardening. We are motivated now, more than ever in the last 50 years, to get back down to earth.

In yoga there is a concept, “As so without, is so within,” and the opposite is also true. The elements that comprise the planet, earth, fire, water, air and space, are also the elements of our bodies. In our current health care crisis in this country (and the co-crisis in rising incidents of heart disease, obesity, diabetes, back problems, etc.) now is also the time to tend to our own micro-environments: our bodies. To think that we can care for an organism as vast and varied as the planet, is an impossibility if we are totally cut off from our own “planets” from the neck down. What we eat, the way eat, how we move, what experiences we subject ourselves to — all play into how we interact with the element at large. In short, our personal health directly reflects the planet’s health. If you are even a first time reader of this magazine, you are likely inclined to agree the time is now to get healthy! Yoga is a time-tested way to do that.

Yoga as a whole mind, body, and spirit health system has been practiced in countless forms since around 3500 BCE. Don’t you think it’s time you tried it? Or if you do practice currently, here are some new places and people to practice with, plus the regulars. Enjoy.
